OUT OF SERVICE

Have you ever been really hungry and the only thing around was a vending machine?  So, as you approached it to make your selection, you noticed a sign that read “out of service.” Or have you ever been waiting for the approaching bus or taxicab, only to discovery that the sign on the marquee read “out of service.”  Or what about this?  You needed gas but as you drove into the station and approached the pumps, you saw they were all covered in plastic bags— now realizing they’re all “out of service.”  As in these examples, so it is in the lives of too many men when it comes to their presence and volunteerism in the community, they are simply “OUT OF SERVICE!”

With so many needs for a male presence in our communities today, I’m perplexed by my constant discovery of men who aren’t doing ANYTHING!  No, I’m not judging these men, nor am I saying these men are bad people, but what I am saying is this, DO SOMETHING!

If you’re one of those men who every time the opportunity for volunteerism comes up, you’re still trying to work out your schedule, and you’ve been working it out for the last 2-5 years, then something is drastically wrong.  Or if you’re that man who’s still trying to “free up some time,” perhaps you need to realize that volunteering for the benefit of others will cost you something.  Or maybe you’re that man who’s flat out looking for any excuse for why you can’t volunteer and serve others, you’re too busy “doing you”.  Well, to you I say, “Something is critically wrong with your thinking, especially if you profess to be a Christian.”

Jesus said, “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many” – Matthew 20:28 (NLT).

The Scripture also says, “When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them.  “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am.  Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.  I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.  Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.  Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them” – John 13:12-17 (NIV).

Do Something!  Volunteer in your community or local church and extinguish the sign that reads “out of service” when it comes to your volunteerism.
