Miracles Matter
Have you ever wondered why miracles occur? Or what even qualifies as a miracle? You hear the term used so often. For instance, “Traffic was so bad. It’s a miracle I made it home!” “It’s so cold outside, it’s a miracle I didn’t freeze.” “I ate so much, it’s a miracle I could walk.” Or, I was up so late last night, it’s a miracle I got up this morning.” At any rate, I hope I’m not the only one who ever entertained this thought. For those of us who ever wondered why miracles occur, let’s look towards the Bible for an answer.
John 2:11 records, “What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” Here brothers and sisters, we see the answer to our inquiring mind and our question, “Why do miracles occur?” According to verse 11, miracles occur so that you may see the glory of God and in seeing believe that Jesus is God. Sometimes that belief is the initial point of conversion, and other times it’s the belief that causes one to continue in the faith. In either case, these are performed for you to believe.
The definition of belief is to think to be true, to have faith in and upon, to cause to be fully persuaded, to place confidence in, to trust and entrust, and to have conviction. Apostle John states in John 20:30-31, “Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” This belief transcends simple head knowledge and compels one to act out in obedience.
The miracle of turning water into wine bypassing the many natural processes needed was a miracle of blessing, abundance, and transformation. God transformed something ordinary into something uniquely extraordinary, just as He does with us when He enters our lives and transforms us into new creations. The old earthy-man passes away, and behold, the new spiritual-man comes forth. In the fulness of time we shall celebrate one mightier miracle, our resurrected body will be changed into a heavenly body in which we too shall attend a wedding with Jesus and drink of the finest wine. MIRACLES MATTER!
